MEC Releases New Report: Snapshot of Foundation Support for Feminist Gender Justice Media

by Jaewon Chung last modified 2010-06-10 13:08

The Media Equity Collaborative (MEC), a practitioner-led initiative committed to movement building of the feminist gender justice media (FGJM) community, continues to build on an SSRC grant for initial efforts to map the FGJM funding sector. The newest report highlights the integral role of committed foundations and individual donors in creating sustainable support for FGJM.

"Snapshot of Foundation Support for Feminist Gender Justice Media" is an examination into the support by foundations of feminist gender justice media (FGJM) organizations inspired by a recent report by the Catalyst Fund of Tides Foundation that focuses on funding women of color-led reproductive justice organizations. FGJM is estimated at 350 groups and cuts a wide swath -- in forms of media, issue concerns, geography, participant age, means of delivery and constituency served.

In this compilation, 20 representative feminist gender justice media organizations, estimated to be 5.7% of the field, were selected based on size, operating budget, geography, media form and delivery. Collectively, from data on organizations’ websites, and augmented through emails, 114 funders have supported these 20 organizations, but only nine (7.9%) were found to be repeat funders of FGJM. The loss of the Media Justice Fund, which was the lead funder for the organizations in this sample, will have especially strong effects on the already hard-pressed community of FGJM organizations and outlets. The Media Equity Collaborative calls for foundations and donors, especially those concerned with gender justice and media, to lead a new initiative.
